Should you learn to fix the PS3 YLOD at home?
The short answer....YES! Here's why..
For one thing, the number of PS3 YLOD cases are on the rise, and steadily on the rise. Even if your console hasnn't yet suffered from YLOD, the chances are that your console could very well suffer from YLOD soon.

Moreover, by the looks of things, the YLOD is most prevalent in PS3s that are older than 1-2 years, thereby losing out on the warranty and leaving you with very little option but to cough up and pay Sony a solid 150$ to get it fixed and whats more, it takes a good 6 weeks before you can even think of getting it back. What is really infuriating is that, more often than not, the fix is extremely simple...the first time I fixed the YLOD, I felt like kicking myself in the shin, I had almost paid Sony 150$ for something that took me barely 2 hours to fix and trust me, I am really far from being handy.
Also, the number of cases where the YLOD has been fixed but returns with YLOD again in 4-5 months is also being noticed. And the interesting thing is, it is usually the same problems over and over again. For example, if the problem the first time around was the overheating of your CPU/GPU(which, incidentally, is the cause for 99% of the cases of PS3 YLOD) , the Yellow light of death returns with the same problem in 4 months or so. Now, how cool would it be, if you were able to fix your PS3 on your own, in less than 2 hours(usually takes far lesser than 2 hours, just that I was being extra careful while fixing my PS3).
You would save yourself recurring costs on a issue that is likely to occur again. Dont need to spend money going to technicians who charge a hefty 60$ to fix the problem which can be fixed by you in no time.

And here is a pretty cool bonus benefit of the whole thing that I didnt realize initially but turned out to be a pretty awesome bonus. Seeing that I fixed my PS3 Yellow light of death, I had 2 friends of friends of mine bring in their PS3 with the same problem...and believe me..it was LITERALLY the same problem, as I said before 99% of the YLOD cases are caused by overheated CPU/GPU(the other faults could be overheating of the PSU or a faulty harddrive or so)...anyways...back to the unexpected bonus, couple of friends had gotten their PS3s to be fixed and with other technicians fixing for 60$ or so, I offered to fix it for 25$ and ka ching! 50$ in my pocket and so far I've fixed 5 PS3s, 4 with overheated GPU and one with a overheated PSU and pocketed over a 100$ easily and I am not even trying, If I actively try, I am sure I could make a solid amount. Heck, you could learn to fix the PX3 Yellow light of death as an investment, and could make a killing...trust me!!
